How much does a custom
drawer organizer cost?

Short answer: $15 – $80 CAD per drawer, before shipping. Long answer: here is exactly where the money goes, with the real math on a 200×200×40 mm order from last week.

200 × 200 × 40 mmFilament293g × $0.028/g$8.20Machine time5.5h × $2/h$11.00Labor + setupper order$2.50RAW COST$21.70× 2 MARGINRETAIL$43.40

Small inserts (think silverware or makeup for a shallow Alex drawer) land at the low end. Large multi-compartment inserts for deep tool chests or wide pantry drawers land at the high end. Open the editor — the price updates in real time as you lay it out. No signup, no "contact us for pricing."

The real breakdown — what you're paying for

Our pricing is a straight physical model, not a market-tested number. Every insert is priced on:

  • Filament cost — the plastic itself, PLA at $0.028 CAD per gram
  • Machine time — the printer running at $2 CAD per hour (electricity, wear, amortized hardware)
  • Fixed labor — $2.50 CAD per order (packing, QA, shipping prep)
  • Setup time — 0.35 hours of warm-up and bed prep per order
  • Margin — a 2× markup on raw cost to keep the business sustainable

That is the whole model. No "complexity premium," no "custom design fee," no monthly subscription.

Worked example: a real order

Here is an actual medium-sized insert — 200 × 200 × 40 mm (about 8 × 8 × 1.5 inches), 18 compartments, single color:

Line itemCalculationCost
Filament293 g × $0.028/g$8.20
Machine time5.5 h × $2/h$11.00
Fixed labor + setup$2.50
Raw cost subtotal$21.70
Retail (× 2 margin)~$43.40

Add shipping and you are at ~$55 CAD delivered to Toronto.

For comparison, a comparable Amazon acrylic set that does not actually fit an Alex drawer costs $25–$40. For $15 more delivered, you get something that fits to the millimeter and never moves.

What moves the price

Drawer footprint. Doubling the interior area roughly doubles the plastic. A 200 × 200 mm insert is ~$20; a 400 × 400 mm insert is ~$40–55.

SizeFootprintDepthPrice
Smallup to 200 × 200 mm3–5 cm$15–$25
Medium200×200 → 300×400 mm3–8 cm$25–$45
Large300×400 → 500×400 mm5–10 cm$40–$80
XL / multi-tileover 500 × 400 mmanyFrom $60

Drawer height. A deeper drawer needs taller walls, which means more plastic. A 3 cm shallow insert prints in ~3 hours; the same footprint at 10 cm takes 7–8 hours.

Tool cutouts. If you are using the tool-silhouette layout (common for mechanic drawers, makeup brush holders, art supplies), each tool pocket adds a tiny bit of print time for the cutout but not much — expect $2–$5 added versus the plain-compartments version of the same drawer.

Colors. Single-color is cheapest. Adding one accent color (body + accent) requires a filament swap mid-print, which bumps time by ~15 min. Expect $3–$5 added for a two-color insert.

Shipping. Toronto-based, ships Canada Post:

If you are in the GTA with a medium-sized insert, you are looking at $45–$55 total including shipping.

The honest math: if you are pricing a single insert, Amazon wins on sticker price. If you are pricing an insert that actually fits and stays put, we are the cheapest option that gets you there.

Why there is no "complexity fee"

A lot of custom-print services add a design fee ($20–$100) because they treat each order as a bespoke engineering job. Ours is $0 because the design tool is yours — you lay out the drawer in a browser, the backend converts your layout into a mesh, and we print whatever came out.

That matters for pricing in two ways:

  1. Revisions are free. You can redesign your insert 100 times before placing an order. No charge until you check out.
  2. Repeat orders are instant. If you order a second insert for the drawer below the first, you duplicate the previous design, adjust the depth, and reorder in two clicks.

FAQs

Is there a minimum order?

We charge a $10 CAD minimum on card orders. A real insert clears this by a wide margin — the minimum exists to defend against bots testing stolen cards on tiny amounts.

Do you offer bulk discounts?

Yes. Four or more inserts in a single order get a bundled shipping rate (one package, not four). For orders of 10+ inserts or anything unusually large, email [email protected] for a batch quote.

Can I get a refund if it does not fit?

If the insert does not match the dimensions you entered in the editor, that's on us — we reprint or refund within 30 days. If the dimensions were wrong at design time, we offer a 60-day reprint window at material cost.

What about tax?

Prices quoted are pre-tax. Canadian HST/GST is added at checkout based on your province (13% Ontario, 15% Maritime, etc). The editor shows the pre-tax total; checkout shows the final.

Why is custom cheaper than Snap-On foam inserts?

Snap-On foam inserts are great, but they are priced into a $800+ toolbox ecosystem. We are pricing just the insert itself, printed to your drawer's dimensions — no toolbox purchase required.

How is your pricing not fluctuating with filament market prices?

PLA has been remarkably stable at $25-$30 per kg for years. Our model prices filament at $0.028 CAD/g which is at the top of that range, so we have some buffer. If PLA jumps 50% we would revisit — until then, prices are stable.
